After reading the first article in the “Email Signatures” series, some of our customers immediately started to create their email signature. As happy as we were that they had followed our advice, we were very glad to have encouraged them!
However, soon we realized that the email signatures of our customers had one common problem: they were not clickable. Many of these signatures contain good quality photographs, cool illustrations and all the necessary details to draw the attention of the recipient. But they were not written in HTML and therefore not clickable.
What is HTML?
HTML is an abbreviation of Hyper Text Markup Language. In normal English this means “markup language”.
It was created because in the early days of the internet the texts did not have a pleasant reading format (letters on black or blue background). Then the HTML was created to apply the format to all documents using standard tags.
Colours, images and hyperlinks can be added to a website, email signatures or other documents using HTML instructions. These instructions are placed on the page through markings (tags) so that browsers such as Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari can read and deliver the information to internet users.
What if your email signature contains a photo?
First and foremost: if your email signature is just a big photo (nothing more and nothing less), you run the risk of seeing your emails as spam or junk mail.
Why?
Because the text/image ratio is too low.
The general rule is: your message must contain more text than visual material. Spam filters use this criterion to distinguish unwanted mail from the ordinary mail. These filters assume that spammers mainly use photos because, in general, they do not have any great HTML knowledge.
Secondly, if someone wants to click on one of the components of your signature or select them (your address, for example), he cannot do that because it is just a photo.
That means a great deal of missed opportunities for you.
Agree, you may have drawn up the image so that you want to lead the reader to your website.
However, what about the person you want to follow on LinkedIn?
Alternatively, the person who wants to view your Instagram feed?
This person will have to make a detour (which he would rather not want or for which he does not have time) and first have to search your website on your social media channels.
That’s not an insurmountable problem of course. However, it’s against one of the essential digital laws: to do everything to make it as easy as possible for the user.
Ok, there will always be a percentage of customers who will be happy they can surf to your website.
However, about 50% of the people who read your email signature in detail want to get to know you differently, through other channels. Like your blog or your social media.
So you have to move heaven and earth to give them that option and make sure they can do that in just one click.
But don’t panic!
It would help if you didn’t unnecessarily bend around corners to make that email signature in HTML.
You even have two options: either you do it yourself, or you spend it on professionals.
How does an email signature work in HTML?
- You or your designer (or Createria) make a nice email signature with links to websites (urls) of your preference.
- Your signature is stored in a hosting = internet data server. Images, hyperlinks, and other data are stored with HTML tags so that all browsers and email systems can read them.
- Every time you send someone an email, your email with your signature goes via the internet to the PC, tablet or smartphone of your receiver.
- The recipient receives your email and clicks on the image.
However, you have to ask yourself the following question: do you want to spend time learning HTML to have a “reasonable” email signature or do you want to rely on a team of specialists who make a “wow” email signature in an instant?
